New Zealand researchers has showed that sauna sessions can ease tension headaches caused by stress.

In a study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, New Zealand researcher Giresh Kanji and his team compares the two groups of patients who are all suffering from Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). 37 people participated in the study, half of which were instructed to take regular sauna baths during a period of 8 weeks. The result was very clear: those who took regular sauna baths experienced significantly lower levels of pain and headache.

 – Sauna bathing is a very simple and effective self-directed treatment that is effective for reducing headache pain intensity in CTTH, the researchers conclude.

One of Giresh Kanjis points of departure when he initiated the study was the fact that headaches, migraines, depression and anxiety are less prevalent in warmer countries.

 – For people who live in colder climates, sauna bathing is a way to benefit from the health effects you would get from living in a warmer country, Kanji says in an interview with the New Zealand magazine Stuff.
